Italian coral, also known as Mediterranean coral or Corallium rubrum, is a precious organic gemstone formed by tiny marine polyps in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly around Italy, Sardinia, and Corsica. This slow-growing coral creates beautiful branching structures with colors ranging from pale pink to deep oxblood red, and has been treasured for jewelry and decorative arts for over 5,000 years. Unlike tropical reef corals, Mediterranean coral is much denser and harder, making it ideal for carving into beads, cameos, and intricate sculptural pieces that showcase its smooth, porcelain-like finish when polished.
