About My Jewelry
Yes. I design and handcraft every piece of The Happy Gems jewelry in my Phoenix studio. You can learn more about my background, creative process, and the story behind The Happy Gems on my My Story page.
A one-of-a-kind piece is an individual design made as a single piece rather than as part of a series. When you purchase one, you are receiving the exact jewelry shown in the photographs, and that particular piece will not be duplicated.
Small-batch means I make a design in very limited quantities rather than producing it on a large scale. Depending on the design and availability of the materials, I may make as few as two or three pieces and typically fewer than eight or ten. Occasionally, I may bring back a popular design when materials are available, but each batch remains intentionally small.
For one-of-a-kind jewelry, yes—you will receive the exact piece shown in the listing. For small-batch designs, I carefully select gemstones and pearls that are as similar as possible to those pictured, but slight variations in color, shape, pattern, or texture are natural and should be expected.
Gemstones & Pearls
Yes, I only use genuine gemstones in my jewelry and carefully hand-select them for their color, character, shape, and natural beauty. I also cut some of my stones myself, starting with rough material that speaks to me and shaping, polishing, and setting it by hand. Because gemstones are created by nature, variations in color, pattern, shape, and inclusions are part of what makes each one unique.
Yes, I only use genuine freshwater pearls or saltwater Akoya and Tahitian pearls, depending on the design. I never use imitation or faux pearls in my designs.
Baroque pearls are genuine pearls with naturally irregular, non-round shapes. I especially love them for their individuality, organic beauty, and the subtle differences that make every pearl—and every piece of jewelry made with them—a little different.
Absolutely. Natural gemstones and pearls can vary in color, pattern, shape, texture, and surface characteristics, and these variations are part of their beauty rather than flaws. They are also one of the reasons handmade jewelry created with natural materials has such individual character.
Metals
Gold-filled jewelry has a substantial layer of real gold permanently bonded to a base metal (such as brass), making it much more durable than ordinary gold plating. Gold-plated jewelry has only a very thin surface layer of gold that may wear over time, while quality gold-filled components can retain their beautiful finish for many years with proper care.
Gold vermeil is sterling silver covered with a substantial overlay of gold. It combines the look of gold with a precious-metal sterling silver base and is a beautiful option for details, beads, clasps, and other components in fine artisan jewelry. Because its base is sterling silver rather than a base metal such as brass, vermeil is generally considered a more precious material and is often more expensive than gold-filled.
Yes, sterling silver can naturally tarnish over time as it reacts with air, moisture, and substances in the environment. This is normal and does not mean the silver is damaged; in most cases, its shine can easily be restored with a soft silver polishing cloth.
Jewelry Care
I recommend removing your jewelry before showering, swimming, or entering a hot tub. Water itself may not harm every material, but chlorine, salt water, soaps, lotions, and other chemicals can affect metals, gemstones, pearls, and finishes over time. You can find more tips on protecting and caring for your jewelry on my Jewelry Care page.
Sizing & Custom Orders
One of the easiest ways is to measure a necklace you already own that sits where you like it. You can also use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string around your neck to see where different lengths will fall, keeping in mind that pendant size and your individual proportions can also affect how a necklace sits.
Sometimes, depending on the design. Small-batch pieces may be easier to adjust, while certain one-of-a-kind or metalsmithed designs may not allow for changes once completed. If you would like a different length, please contact me before ordering; if I confirm that the adjustment is possible, you can place your order and I will make the agreed-upon modification before shipping your piece.
I’m happy to consider custom requests based on designs you see on my website—for example, a different length, material, gemstone, or other modification—when I have the appropriate materials and the design allows for it. Please contact me first so we can discuss what you have in mind and I can confirm whether I’m able to make it. Because custom pieces are made specifically for you, custom orders are final sale and are not eligible for returns.
Packaging & Gifting
Your jewelry will arrive carefully packaged and ready for gifting, in the style best suited to the individual piece. Examples of the packaging I use are shown in the photographs at the end of each product listing, and I choose from those options based on the size, style, and type of jewelry being sent.
